In The Spotlight: Zhizao's Intership at PBL

To finish my EES master, I did one internship at the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (PBL) between the 1st of September and 31th of December. The main topic of this internship is to improve the link between the hydrogen module and electricity module in the IMGAGE/TIMER model. During this internship, I worked in the Climate, Air and Energy department and I was supervised by Harmen Sytze de Boer and David Gernaat. Meanwhile, other colleagues in PBL also provided me important information and advice whenever I encountered difficulties in my project. During the period of my internship, I have experienced the great working atmosphere at PBL which has great balance between flexibility and consistency of working. Moreover, PBL has very good reputation in doing scientific sound research and has produced many high quality research. Working in PBL also push myself to improve my research and writing skills.

In this internship, three main aspects of work are done for PBL. First of all, a proposal about the potential update of efficiency, capital cost and learning rate of existing hydrogen generation options in the IMGAGE/TIMER model has been made. Secondly, essential information and data about the efficiency, capital cost and learning rate of the essential system elements in the hydrogen-to-power route from wide range of literature review are provided to PBL. Finally, system integration that focus on the suitability of the existing natural gas system in TIMER for the hydrogen-to-power route and the implementation of the power-to-hydrogen-to-power route into the TIMER. A report is submitted to the PBL as the final delivery of this internship.

After the finish of internship, I have received positive feedback from the PBL. By evaluating their feedback and what I have learned from the EES master program, I realized that EES courses have well prepared me for dealing with the challenges in this internship. EES master program has offered me the essential knowledge from wide range of well-designed courses and cultivated me the skills for performing research related to energy and environment topics. Most importantly, all these experiences help me to understand both my strength and weakness which are crucial for my future career.
